How do I work out my annual electricity or gas consumption?

On your invoices for the last year, they will state the 'kWh' used for each invoice period. Add these together for 1 year and that will be your annual consumption. If you have more than 1 electricity or gas meter, then just add these together, but don’t add electricity and gas together, these should be entered separately into the Zellar platform.

What is the emissions forecast?

This is our projection of how your company can get to Net Zero Carbon by 2030 by taking actions through behaviour changes, investing in energy efficient tech, switching to zero carbon energy suppliers and offsetting remaining emissions.

What is the GHG Protocol?

The Greenhouse Gas Protocol is a comprehensive global standardised framework for allocating and reporting carbon emissions.

How do I reduce my emissions?

Follow the zellar behaviour advice and invest in green tech in order to make you building as energy efficient as possible and lower your energy costs. You can switch to a zero carbon supplier and offset your emissions as well via the zellar platform which will also reduce your emissions.

What is a deep green supplier?

Zellar has assessed all of the electricity suppliers products and have made decisions on those that are 100% renewable and will have zero emissions. These are what we call deep green. There are lots of supplier products that legally state they are green and zero emissions, but at Zellar we have excluded products from the 'Deep Green' category that we believe contain fossil fuels. This way customers get an independent assessment of the source of the fuel as being truly green when they buy a Deep Green product.

How will my data update when I take action to reduce emissions?

Your energy consumption will update automatically each year which should reduce if you change behaviours or invest in energy efficient technology. If you switch to a lower or zero emissions electrical supplier or you offset your emissions via the zellar platform, then the carbon emissions will update from the date of the contracts starting.

Does each energy supplier have a different carbon emissions factor?

If a supplier is truly 'deep green' or 'zero carbon' then their emissions factor will be zero. All other suppliers will have different factors depending on their published fuel mix or when Zellar believes it is not 100% clear that the energy they have purchased is really zero emissions.

Why is the typical benchmark numbers not in the middle of the ranges?

The ranges are there based upon the minimum and maximum benchmark that we believe could be achieved. The typical is not the average, it is an assessment of what Zellar believes is a good level of energy and carbon intensity. This will change over time as more and more customers from each sector join the platform.

How are my carbon emissions calculated?

(Your total electric consumption x your electric supplier carbon emission factor) + (Your total gas consumption x the UK gas carbon emission factor)

Behaviours

I have changed some of my companys behaviours, but my consumption does not seem to be reducing.

Please check you are submitting your meter readings each month to your energy supplier. If you are not, then your annual consumption for electric and gas which is held by industry will not be updated and therefore you will not see any reductions on the platform. If you want to see quicker results, then read the meters yourself on a weekly/monthly basis as this will show a quicker trend from the actions that you take.

Why is none of the behaviour advice applicable to my business?

Please check that you have set up your profile correctly and that your business is in the right sector/sub-sector as the advice is driven from here. If this is correct, then please contact us via the platform so we can investigate further.

Is there a place I can record when I have implemented a behaviour change?

I don’t know the answer to this?

I have some equipment that I think is a large energy consumer that is not mentioned at all in the behaviour advice. What should I do?

Please contact us via the platform so we can discuss this with you directly. We have tried to cover off the most common energy consuming devices that SMEs have so there might be some specialist equipment that we need to know more about with your help.

Green Tech

I have purchased and installed some of the tech products suggested, but my consumption does not seem to be reducing.

I am a Zellar customer who has some energy saving tech that I would like to put on your platform?

Please contact us via the platform and we can discuss this with you to understand the product and its energy saving credentials. If we believe this is right for our customers, then we can add the product in later releases.

I am not sure the amount of energy or carbon savings that is being stated is correct?

Please let us know via the platform why you think this is the case and we will look into this and contact you to discuss.

What is the energy saving percentage?

This is the amount of energy that will be saved if you invest in the new technology. There are a couple of key points to note: 1. Every building is different and there are many factors which drive the actual savings so this is only a direction guide on the savings available. 2. The % represents the energy that will be saved on that piece of equipment, it isn't the energy of your whole building. As an example, if you upgrade to LED lighting, this wont reduce your whole buildings energy by 70%, just the amount of energy consumed in the building.

The tech supplier I have contacted is not helpful and is not responding to my enquiry?

Please let us know via the platform and we will take this up with the supplier. In the meantime, if there is more than one supplier of the tech on the platform, then try contacting one of the other suppliers.

When I click on one of the links to the tech suppliers, the link doesn’t work?

Please let us know via the platform and we will get that fixed. In the meantime, if there is more than one supplier of the tech on the platform, then try contacting one of the other suppliers.

Should I go for the best carbon savings or the best payback periods?

This is entirely up to you and your commercial situation. From a Zellar perspective, we would love you to invest in the products that will save you the most carbon, but clearly that may not work economically for every customer. It is best to create yourself a carbon saving budget and then invest as you go along and can afford it.

How do I know how much these will cost me?

The product cost may differ for every customer and therefore we have given a range of cost savings and payback times to help guide you (as well as a scale of carbon savings as well). To find out the exact costs for you, you would need to click on one of the supplier links and they will help you establish if the product is applicable for you and the firm costs/timescales.

Energy Quoting

Will I be credit checked when I decide to switch to a new supplier?

Yes. Every supplier will credit check you and may have wider stipulations regarding your business that could preclude you from taking up a supply contract with them. Zellar will perform a basic experian check ahead of that, but you would need to refer to the specific t&cs of each supplier once you have chosen the right one for you.

Is there a cooling off period from when I have signed a contract?

There isn't one at the moment, but as part of the Micro business stragic review by Ofgem, they are proposing a 14 day cooling off period for Micro-businesses.

I have signed an LOA with a broker and I am worried that they might continue to sign contracts on my behalf.

You need to write to your broker and terminate that contract and the LOA and ensure you get a confirmation response. Check the termination clauses and process in the contract documentation you have.

Can I switch supplier mid contract?

No. If you have signed a contract, then you are bound to this until the end of the contract period.

Can I change to a new supplier if I still own my old supplier money?

No. Most suppliers will object if there is debt on the account, so ensure this does not happen or you will go on to very high out of contract rates at the end of the contract period.

What do I do if my new supplier tells me that my existing supplier has objected to me leaving them?

There are very few reasons for an objection and the most common two are that there is debt on the account or that your supply contract is still valid for several months. If this is not the case for either, then you will need to contact your existing supplier to find out why and if you do not think this is a valid reason, then you should make a complaint as this will speed up the switching process.

Do I have to tell my old supplier I am leaving them?

We would recommend that you tell your supplier that you are leaving at the end of your current contract in line with their terms and conditions. This will avoid incorrect objections when the new supplier starts your registration process.

How long will it take for me to change to a new supplier?

The suppliers have a maximum of 21 days to switch you from the reciept of a valid, signed supply contract. There are reasons why this could be extended or objected to, but assuming your contract with your existing supplier is coming to an end or already ended and you have no debt on your account, the 21 day switch should be possible.

Offsetting

What's the difference between Zellar's carbon offset projects and its biodiversity projects?

Carbon offset projects go through a strict verification process to demonstrate that the credit you are buying has lead to the removal of carbon emissions. Our biodiversity projects purely focus on the outcome of their work. Many biodiversity projects have a positive carbon impact but don't go through the verification process - often as the verification is too expensive or simply doesn't exist for their project type

How do I know the projects are real?

To meet these standards, projects must demonstrate they are:

‘verifiable’, this means there is a robust audit trail and reductions are only claimed once, ‘additional’ meaning the carbon reductions would not have occurred without the sale of carbon,‘avoiding leakage’ meaning emissions are not just moved elsewhere and ‘permanent’ so the carbon savings will be sustained over time.

How do Zellar choose their projects?

Zellar aims to provide our businesses the best range of offset projects. In the UK, this means a range of locations - we're working hard to find projects in every corner of the country. Internationally, we work with our intermediaries to find a smaller number of high quality & distinct projects.

Where does my money go?

Zellar aim to minimise transaction fees and ensure that our customers get the best rate, you pay the same price through Zellar as if you went direct to our supplier. Our suppliers pay transaction fees of: - 3% to Zellar for the transaction process - The remaining 97% goes to our suppliers. For UK projects, this is typically the landowner or the project developer who created the project. For international projects, we work with UK intermediaries who source, vet and manage the supply of offset - taking a maximum commission of 20% for this service.

Why should I buy through Zellar?

Zellar offers the widest range of UK offset projects at no extra cost meaning you pay the direct supplier rate. Also we make it simpler by providing everything you need all in one place and the chance to share your story and your offset investments with your customers.

How many tonnes of carbon should I buy and how often?

You can become a carbon neutral business by purchasing the equivalent amount of tonnes of carbon as the carbon emissions you produce. You would need to buy these tonnes each year. There is no reason to stop here though - many leading sustainability businesses buy far more offsets than they emit.

What is the difference between carbon offset projects and future carbon offset projects?

Carbon offset projects are units of carbon that have already been verified, i.e. the trees have already grown. Future carbon offset (technically called PIU's) are units of carbon that will be reduced or sequestered over time, i.e. the trees have just been planted. For more info, visit https://woodlandcarboncode.org.uk/buy-carbon/what-are-woodland-carbon-units

Which carbon offset projects should I support?

This is a tricky question as Zellar provides such a great selection of projects - all of which deliver brilliant results! Zellar are big supporters of UK projects and in purchasing future tonnes of carbon, funding projects in the early stage of their development. However, if you are looking for the carbon neutral claim, then you will need to buy standard carbon offset. If you are on a tight budget, then why not buy a mix of UK credits and cheaper international offset.

Why should I support carbon offset projects?

Buying tonnes of carbon has a positive impact on the environment and it demonstrates your commitment to sustainability. This improves your brand image, allows you to connect with local sustainable projects and attracts customers, employees and investors. It's also the right thing to do. By using Zellar to find the best projects and share the story, the benefits are huge.

How does offsetting fit into my sustainability journey?

Businesses can only do so much, so fast, within their own operations. Supporting carbon offset projects is therefore a great way to have a bigger impact and demonstrate your commitment to sustainability. Just remember that climate change won't be solved through offsetting alone and we need businesses to continue making real changes internally.

Biodiversity

What's the difference between Zellar's carbon offset projects and its biodiversity projects?

Carbon offset projects go through a strict verification process to demonstrate that the credit you are buying has lead to the removal of carbon emissions. Our biodiversity projects purely focus on the outcome of their work. Many biodiversity projects have a positive carbon impact but don't go through the verification process - often as the verification is too expensive or simply doesn't exist for their project type.

How do Zellar choose their projects?

Zellar aims to provide our businesses the best range of biodiversity projects. We are working hard to bring in projects from every corner of the country and across a range of different habitat types. We focus on projects that are based in one location and can demonstrate their impact. Currently, we only work with charity partners but we are reviewing how private individuals could bring on verifiable biodiversity projects.

Where does my money go?

Charities can list projects on Zellar for free. 100% of your funding will go to the charity.

Why should I buy through Zellar?

1.Local projects - Zellar lists projects from a range of charities to try and bring a project close to you 2.No extra cost - 100% of your funding goes to the charity 3. Flexibility - You can get in touch with charity projects directly to ensure the project is suited to your needs 4. All in one place - One platform to manage and track your full sustainability journey  5. Share your story - Show your audience your biodiversity projects.

How much should I put towards biodiversity projects? Do I have a biodiversity footprint?

Good questions. All businesses have some impact on the Earth's land, both through their own sites and their supply chains. This land use has some level of habitat impact and therefore some net biodiversity loss. Unfortunately, it's very difficult to measure! This means there is no right answer to how much you should invest. Each business should do what feels right for them, knowing that the more you give the bigger the impact on the planet and the greater the story you can share.

Why should I support biodiversity projects?

Supporting biodiversity projects has a positive impact on the environment and it demonstrates your commitment to sustainability. This improves your brand image, allows you to connect with local sustainable projects and attracts customers, employees and investors. It's also the right thing to do. By using Zellar to find the best projects and share the story, the benefits are huge.

How do biodiversity projects fit into my sustainability journey?

Alongside and interlinked with climate change, the world is facing a biodiversity crisis. The main cause of this crisis is habitat loss, an area where all businesses have an impact through their sites and the resources they use. Businesses have two solutions - firstly, they should look at their on-site and supply chain impacts and try to minimise them. Secondly, they can support biodiversity projects.

What are biodiversity projects?

Zellar's biodiversity projects are handpicked schemes that allow animals to thrive - often via habitat creation or protection. Whether it's supporting a wetland, woodland or marine environment, these projects bring a host of social and environmental benefits. Many help remove carbon from the air but cannot be called carbon offsetting as that carbon is not measured and verified.
